Vulnerability

Continuing on the learnings from the EPIC camper van trip during the month of June, I want to share my experience being vulnerable.

Vulnerability is not easy for physicians.

We are socialized from very early in our training to “be tough”, “be strong”,

“See one, do one, teach one”

Don’t show weakness

Figure it out on your own

So, no wonder vulnerability is not one of my go-to traits!

On the camper van trip, I was plagued with a REALLY bad case of poison ivy (see previous July blogs for all the details). About one week into the trip and throughout the entire second week, I was miserable – scratching until I hyperventilated, not sleeping (despite lots of diphenhydramine) and TEARS – lots of tears from frustration and exhaustion.

I needed help –

The trip was at risk as I was considering turning around and heading back to the Northeast.

I had to accept help

And

Admit that I wasn’t able to do it all on my own.

Ultimately, I accepted a visit from my very supportive partner – he flew out for a long weekend and we ditched the van in exchange for a more comfortable stay in an AirBnB. He provided moral support, a shoulder to cry on and some much-needed company.  His visit allowed for a reset of my trip that kept me going to the end.

Reaching out to ask for whatever it is you need…

Whatever it might be.

How do we as doctors ask for help? Show our vulnerability?

If you are in the process of a career transition, asking for help is paramount!

Successful transition to any new career requires help –

And

It is 100% OK to ask

Generally, people want to help – they feel valuable when they are able to share their knowledge, network and learnings.

So, allow yourself to be vulnerable and seek out those that are helpers.
