The STARs align!
S = SITUATION
T = TASK
A = ACTION
R = RESULT
In an interview, you want to be specific AND concise. The STAR technique provides a framework to follow that you can refer to despite the nervousness you might feel during an interview.
Situation: provide specifics of a situation or story that sets the stage for your answer to the question. Provide SPECIFIC details but only in 1-2 sentences.
Task: Describe what you were being tasked with; what was the goal you were to achieve?
Action: HERE IS WHERE YOU SHINE! Explain what you accomplished.
Result: Outline what impact you had based upon the actions you took.
In this framework, the focus (and thus, the amount of time you spend) should be on the ACTION and RESULT. Set up the SITUATION and TASK briefly, while still be specific.
The STAR technique is effective because you can utilize it to answer any question. Practice a few of the behavioral interview questions with this technique when you are preparing for interviews. If you are posed a question that you have not prepped for, you can revert to the STAR technique as a framework and quickly provide a great answer.
