Playing the Cello
I often have clients say they are worried… concerned…nervous
About their resume
About interviewing
About negotiating
They are, in fact, SCARED.
And, yet to achieve the goal, they must show up.
They must press on.
Breathe
Be brave
Man Up, Woman Up, Person Up
I started cello lessons a couple of years ago, during Covid quarantine.
I’m on Book 3 of Suzuki Cello.
My music teacher believes her students need to play in front of people
And
She pushes us to do so – recitals, public performances.
I get SCARED
Nervous
Heart palpitations
What if I make a screeching noise?
What if I completely play the wrong note?
What if I embarrass myself?
Completely and utterly self-conscious.
And
I still show up
My brain and my thoughts tell me to run
“Don’t go”, “don’t show up”
“RUN”
Yet, I went to the Festival of Trees in Reading, MA and I played my cello.
With 5 other students – I was the only adult student.
I played Angels We Have Heard on High
And, we the thought “I know my music”, I survived.
I actually thrived.
I am proud of showing up
Of
Putting myself out into the world.
Our brains try to protect us; to keep us from danger.
But playing my cello is not dangerous.
Writing a resume is not dangerous.
Interviewing for a job is not dangerous.
And neither, negotiating.
Show up
Put yourself out into the world.
I grew today; after playing my cello.
I walked out of the venue with my head held high.
I prepared
I practiced
I was ready
And I performed.
